Right to appeal/Appeal procedures |
All Title IV recipients have the right to appeal a financial aid suspension decision by submitting an appeal form (no later than the 21st day of classes during the quarter in which reinstatement is sought.) to the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships (OSFAS) with a written explanation of the following:
- how an error may have occurred, or
- how mitigating circumstances beyond their control affected their academic performance.
It is recognized that special mitigating circumstances may cause a student to fail to achieve the Satisfactory Academic Progress standards. Mitigating circumstances include the following:
- Death in the family
- Separation or divorce of the student or student's parents
- Severe accident or illness of the student, student's spouse, or parent(s)*
- Extended hospitalization of the student*
- Changes in the student's major course of study
- Re-enrollment after a period of extended absence (three or more years), and
- Other extreme circumstances as determined by the OSFAS

Students may also obtain appeals by contacting the OSFAS or any Regional Campus Office of Student Services. All appeals must be filed in a timely manner. Appeals submitted to the OSFAS after the 21st day of classes will be held for the next quarter. Students will be notified of a decision within one week of the appeal decision. If the appeal is denied, a final appeal may be made to the Director of Financial Aid and Scholarships within two weeks of the date of the denial letter. A student may only appeal his/her ineligible status two times during his/her undergraduate academic career at Ohio University and two times during his/her graduate career at Ohio University if necessary.
