Loan Acceptance for First-Time Federal Direct
Student Loan Borrowers

You have been awarded a Federal Direct Student Loan. All first-time borrowers are required to complete an Electronic Master Promissory Note (EMPN) and Entrance Counseling. In order to complete these requirements, you will need your Department of Education Pin Number. If you do not have your Pin Number, you can apply for one at the Department of Education's Pin web site. To accept your loan follow the two links below. (Please scroll down if necessary.)
  • Complete an Electronic Master Promissory Note (EMPN) at http://dlenote.ed.gov.

Your promissory note will not show a specific loan period or amount because it will serve as your promissory note for future loans. Please refer to your Award Letter for the amount of your Subsidized/Unsubsidized Federal Direct Student Loan for this academic year.
  • Complete Entrance Counseling at http://www.dl.ed.gov. Once you are on the site, select the GO box.  (shown below)

By completing the Electronic Master Promissory Note and Entrance Counseling, you will have accepted your first Federal Direct Student Loan.

You can find general information about student loans on our web page and in The Student Guide published by the Department of Education.
